Green Hornets baseball experienced success in the 11U ranks this summer.

The 11U Green Hornets went a combined 38-16 overall competing in tournaments and the super-competitive Chesapeake Regional Amateur Baseball league.

Severna Park players Benji Beisler, Lawson Fenn, Tavion Griffin, Ryder Halloran, Riley Handwerger, Charlie Hartman, Nick Hulme, Andrew Kummer, Theo Loughlin, Nick Nobleza, Cade Schuetter and Jacob Williams went 12-6 in CRAB league play and fared well in a handful of tournaments. The team was a semifinalist in the 24-team Ripken Memorial Day tournament and a semifinalist in the 20-team Ripken Independence Day Classic.

From there, the team racked up tournament wins to make the finals of three subsequent tournaments: the Mid-Atlantic Tournament Baseball Summer Classic, the Hersey Firecracker Tournament and the Howard County Youth Program Raiders Summer Clash.

Severna Park was 10-2 overall in the latter two tournaments, falling 5-4 in 10 innings in the HCYP Summer Clash championship game in an “epic” matchup with the host HCYP Raiders, said coach Chad Hartman.

“It was probably the best 11U baseball game that I have ever witnessed,” said Hartman. “Even though we ended up coming up on the short end of the scoreboard, this will be [a] game that I fondly remember for years to come. To see the kids make big play after big play on the field, the mound, and at the plate to extend the game was truly special.”

Hartman coached the team with assistant coaches Scott Handwerger, James Williams, Michael Kummer and Scott Schuetter and said the boys progressed steadily over the year.

“I’m extremely proud of the boys and the effort that they put in all season long, beginning in the fall,” said Hartman. “It has been a lot of fun watching them develop as baseball players and young men. I can’t thank the assistant coaches enough for their time and dedication to teaching the game of baseball the right way and for being great role models to the kids.”
