American Builder Services Does Things The Old-Fashioned Way

Founded in 1980 by Thomas A. Brown, Sr., American Builder Services, Inc. is a second-generation, local, family-owned and operated custom home building and remodeling business. It’s also one of the few Certified Master Builders in the area recognized by the Home Builder Association of Maryland. The business has been operated by Tom Brown’s two sons, Thomas A. Brown, Jr. and Michael T. Brown, since their father’s death seven years ago.

They specialize in custom building throughout Anne Arundel, Calvert, and Queen Anne Counties, and also do renovations, additions, decks, siding, and roof replacements.
“While we have always had our home improvement license and have done an addition here and there, up until last year our main focus was primarily custom building new homes,” stated Tom Jr. “And while we still have custom homes under construction, with the economy in a slump we have really relied on the home improvement side of construction pay the bills. We have been able to turn out some very complex jobs ranging from sun rooms and new kitchens to complete roof removal for second-floor additions. The best part of our remodeling so far,” he says, “is our clients have been 100% satisfied.”
With almost 58 years of combined custom building experience, the Brown’s have built hundreds of homes and their clients have come from all facets of life. They have built homes for brothers and neighbors of past clients, business associates, drywall contractors, plumbers, and even large developer/builders.
“Customer satisfaction is always our top goal. We understand the importance of maintaining excellent communication with our clients throughout the construction process and we encourage our customers to be on site with or without us, to get to know our tradesmen, and find fault with our construction. By doing so, we can address any concerns that our customers might have,” explains Mike Brown.
Recalling the days spent under his dad’s tutelage, Tom Jr. commented, “I remember being in the field with my dad when he first started the company. He would always stress that building a home with the highest quality and care was far more important than seeing how inexpensively it could be built.”
That long lasting philosophy has paid off for American Builder Services. Six years ago it received the Builder of Integrity Award from Quality Builders Warranty Corporation for 25 years of complaint free service. At 31 years and counting, they are still complaint free.
Both Mike and Tom, Jr. believe that building homes with old-fashioned values and integrity is the foundation of their success.
“Our customers can rely on us to be there for them long after the project is finished. Many of them have become family friends,” confesses Mike, who frequently surprises past customers of long ago with a free snow plowed driveway.
“Mike and I are extremely proud of our ability to produce outstanding products in a friendly and open way. As always, our pricing is very competitive, but we have not sacrificed quality, service, and the way we do business,” shares Tom Jr. continuing, “With the downturn in the economy and the effect it’s had on housing, this is by far the best time to build a new home or have a renovation done.”
