ASPIRE, Kiwanis To Host Nonprofits Networking Luncheon

The Association for Severna Park Improvement, Renewal and Enhancement, Inc. (ASPIRE) and the Kiwanis Club of Severna Park will co-host a networking event for nonprofit groups on Sunday, September 16, at Lake Waterford Park in Pasadena. The free event is open to all nonprofit organizations and their members; RSVP is appreciated.

“Being a part of a nonprofit is a hard job,” said Krista Latchaw, event organizer. “From planning activities to fundraising, and trying to come up with ways to improve the community to staying afloat at the same time, a lot of us are on our own.”

Latchaw is a member of both ASPIRE and the Kiwanis Club. “I realized that, although we have ‘met,’ there is definitely an opportunity to do more with each other,” she said of the two groups.

Latchaw came up with the networking event as an easy way for nonprofits in the area to get together and share ideas.

“We won’t solve all of our issues in a day, but at least we may get the ball rolling,” she added. “I firmly believe that when groups band together, we can have a much bigger impact on the community. For everyone to be successful and live in a well-rounded place, we need the community and the community needs us.”

The luncheon will be informal with an atmosphere conducive to creating collaboration.

“If people meet in a classroom setting or a town hall, they may be less likely to make small talk and share their experiences,” said Latchaw. “But when you have a gathering with food and friends, that’s when the ideas and friendships happen. We encourage people to bring spouses, kids or pets to have a nice afternoon at the park and share a meal.”

The luncheon is potluck, so people should bring a dish to share as a symbol that when several people chip in together, the load is lightened for everyone.

After a brief introduction of the ASPIRE and Kiwanis groups, attendees will mingle with members of other groups, make contacts, ask questions and learn from one another. Organizations are also invited to bring marketing materials.

Organizers expect representatives from up to 50 organizations such as the Magothy River Association; Boy Scouts of Oak Hill; Severna Park Museum Group; Chartridge, Berrywood, and Ben Oaks community members; Greater Severna Park Council; and Hospice of the Chesapeake. “If people are members of a nonprofit group around the area, we’d love to have you,” added Latchaw.

The mission of ASPIRE is to create and implement solutions to present and future needs in order to enhance the lives of Severna Park residents. The scope of its work is deliberately broad and can include beautification, community planning, environmental health, community enhancements, revitalization projects, cultural arts activities and historic preservation, all right here in Severna Park.

The event is on Facebook (search ASPIRE Severna Park) or email Latchaw at klatchaw@stockamp.com for more information or to RSVP.
