St. John the Evangelist students were delighted to see their pastor, the Rev. Jim Proffitt, enjoying his morning coffee from the awning of their school on Tuesday, May 7. Thanks to some generous donors at the parish and school wine tasting and auction event last November, Proffitt, the Rev. Michael Rubeling and Deacon Justin Gough spent a not-so-restful night’s sleep on the roof of St. John the Evangelist School.

“The looks on the kids’ faces as they were dropped off for school and seeing us up there was priceless,” said Proffitt. “So many big smiles, and a few looks of bewilderment, were priceless. As I conclude my time as pastor of this wonderful community, this will be a fond memory that I cherish.” Proffitt has been appointed director of clergy personnel for the Archdiocese of Baltimore effective July 1.

The thought of sending the clergy on the roof inspired numerous bidders to raise their paddles during a live auction. The biannual wine tasting event also featured silent auctions. More than $53,000 was netted at the event, including $15,000 raised to have the clerics camp on the roof. All funds support St. John through the school, youth and Faith Formation programs.

“We are grateful for the generosity of the parishioners and school families and for the adventurous spirit of our priests,” said Casey Buckstaff, St. John the Evangelist School principal. “An event like this creates enthusiasm throughout the St. John community for our mission while it raises funds for our future programs.”
