Whether it’s a new house or time to redecorate an old one, there’s one point where most people just start scratching their heads in confusion and ask: What are we going to do with the windows? Looking at window treatments can be an overwhelming task filled with unfamiliar terms and too many choices. That’s when the services of a professional like Beth McFeely come in handy.

A graduate of the Custom Home Furnishings School in North Carolina, McFeely has been doing windows in Severna Park for over 10 years. “I have always had a talent for sewing and an eye for design, and I always wanted to run my own business. While our children were young, I was able to run my business from our home. I still maintain my custom-designed work space in our home. This allows me to keep overhead costs minimal so we can price our products lower than competitors,” McFeely explains.

McFeely originally started out sewing window treatments from fabric her clients brought to her, but over the years she took on more and more of the design aspect, carrying different lines of fabric, hardware and trim. Throughout the years the company has expanded to carrying several different lines of plantation shutters, blinds and shades.

“We employ two people who do all our sewing and a team of installers who specialize in both blind and shutters,” explains McFeely, adding, “Because of my sewing background, even though I no longer do any of the sewing, I am able to oversee all aspects of every project to ensure all window treatments are constructed to the highest standards. Someone once said I care more about their window treatments than my clients do, and I guess that’s accurate! It is truly my passion!”

One area that sets McFeely apart from competitors is the ability to stay within budget. Realizing that people have different priorities, she prides herself on being able to work within different budgets, but believes knowing the current trends is important too.

“Years ago when the economy was much better, people wanted panels with lots of trims and ornate hardware. Top treatments were fairly elaborate,” she recalled. “The trend right now is clean, simple, lines. People want simple panels and valances that are more tailored. Plantation Shutters are our biggest selling window treatment right now since they can provide both privacy and enhance any décor with style.”

A strong local focus is high on McFeely’s priority list. “I hope people will support local businesses and give us a chance to compete against the larger chains,” she implores. For customers, that means McFeely is able to offer the personal attention they won’t get elsewhere. “I take pride in my work, and enjoy helping beautify Severna Park.”

McFeely does her part to support local business too. She is active in the Greater Severna Park Chamber of Commerce, and recently donated the custom window treatments in their meeting room. She has also participated in the ABC show “Extreme Home Makeover,” creating custom window treatments in a home for at-risk girls. This summer she will begin work for a Baltimore organization that houses battered women.
