Canine Blood Supply Low

Posted

There is currently a blood shortage at the Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank (EVBB); the inventory has dropped well below safe levels. In order to meet the needs of local veterinary hospitals and hospitals across the nation, the doctors and staff of the EVBB are asking for help. Healthy canines are needed to join the all-volunteer blood donor program.
“Currently, we only have about 1-2 days supply of packed red blood cells in our bank. We are having difficulty stocking the local emergency hospitals so they have blood readily available when dogs it,” said EVBB Donor Coordinator Brandee Stout.
The EVBB staff is appealing to all dog lovers and asking for help recruiting healthy dogs into the program. Healthy dogs at least 35 pounds, between the ages of 9 months and 7 years, and eager to receive tummy rubs and treats are encouraged to schedule an appointment.
