Dr. Paul Kinsey Combines Artistry And Science In Dentistry Practice

“It’s a wonderful time to be a dentist.”

That’s how Dr. Paul Kinsey, founder and owner of Severn River Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, views the advancements and modern capabilities of dental health and medicine today. “I never thought in dental school I’d be doing half these things we’re doing today,” he observed.

Throughout his 30 years in the industry, Kinsey has seen many developments, but he still remembers what inspired him to be a dentist. “What’s nice about dentistry, what attracted me to it, is that it’s a combination of artistry and science,” he said. “We’re sculpting and designing and fabricating things that have to be lifelike in the mouth; there’s the art side to it. Then there’s the science and physics side to it that we have to do also.”

Kinsey opened his practice in 1986 after graduating magna cum laude from University of Maryland School of Dentistry and doing a year of residency at Prince George’s County General Hospital. “I was looking all over Maryland for a utopia in which to practice dentistry, and there really wasn’t one,” he recalled. “So my wife and I decided to pick the area where we wanted to live and raise children, and open a practice there. That was Severna Park … And as it turns out, it’s been a great place to work, recreate and raise a family.”

Kinsey often describes Severna Park as a big town with a small-town feel — it’s boxed in by major roads and waterways, so residents are apt to shop locally and know their neighbors better. “I like this because we support local businesses and it allows me to see and associate with many patients that I have developed relationships with over the years,” he said. “I love running into patients in town; it makes you feel like the hometown doc.”

Originally located along Ritchie Highway, Severn River Cosmetic & Family Dentistry moved to its current location on Benfield Road about 10 years ago, and the Class A building offers Kinsey a place that’s, as he described it, “modern and efficient yet warm and friendly.”

His office is also staffed by an exemplary team who make each patient feel taken care of personally.

“As a general practice, unlike some other general practices, we have the personnel and the facility to handle young children, age 2 or 3, to seniors, and everyone in between,” Kinsey said. “So it truly is a family practice. It’s not limited to adults or children — it’s both.” Patients can depend on Kinsey and his team for everything from a routine cleaning to full-mouth reconstruction, and if there’s anything his office can’t handle, he can refer patients to the right person. “I’ve developed relationships with excellent specialists in the area,” he explained. “You get great care not only here. If we need to refer you to someone, we have that network of relationships with super specialists we can send you to.”

Kinsey and his staff know that their patients are busy and that time is precious, so they strive to stay on schedule and see patients at their appointed times. “We have been told we have the coldest reception room chairs in the county,” Kinsey said.

As someone who is proud to both live and work in Severna Park, Kinsey is an active volunteer and philanthropist. He has participated in Feed the Children through Mariners’ Church in Annapolis, where he worships, by marketing the endeavor and rallying financial support. Individually, Kinsey is also busy giving back to the community, whether that’s through volunteering as a coach for Green Hornets, which he did in the past while his daughters were growing up, or participating in a 525-mile bicycle ride to benefit juvenile arthritis, a particularly memorable endeavor. “I was able to enjoy the bike ride, but at the same time, affect some of the children who are afflicted with this disease.” Money generated from the ride will help send children with juvenile arthritis to camps where they can befriend peers who face the same challenges they do.

Kinsey is also a volunteer with the Stanton Community Center’s dental clinic in Annapolis, where many other Anne Arundel dentists go on their days off to provide care for people who do not otherwise have access to health services.

As for the years ahead, Kinsey said, the sky’s the limit. “The technology of dentistry these days allows us to practice smarter, faster, more comfortably, and better than in the past, and that trend is likely to continue,” he said. “This will hugely benefit our patients in the future.”

Kinsey plans for his office to stay current and continue “riding the wave of dentistry,” offering the latest technology and techniques for patients. “We’re doing some of the best dentistry I’ve ever done in my career now in terms of services we offer and how we offer them,” he said. “Things are constantly getting better. I think it’s a great time to be involved in dentistry.”
