There is no denying that this month Severna Park is caught up in Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival fever. The annual show draws huge crowds of loyal followers and regularly sells out many shows. Since I’m new to the area, my question was pretty simple: “It’s a high school production, how big a deal can it really be?”
After attending a dress rehearsal on Wednesday, March 3, I changed my tune. Drastically! It really is that big of a deal, and for a very, very good reason. Even with a week of rehearsals and refinement yet to go, I was bowled over by the quality of the show. The hard work from the kids, the dedicated parents, the incredible staff and volunteers going way above and beyond… But this wasn’t some run of the mill school production, this was really good stuff.
Our print schedule meant the March issue would come out right at the same time the show was set to open. It made my job as editor difficult. That was, until I went to the dress rehearsal.
The second I saw the sets with the Route 66 theme, the dressing rooms with costume changes sorted and organized by performer and number, and the crowd of eager kids, I was hooked - and my timing problem was solved!
I settled in to take some pictures, knowing the March issue could focus on the behind the scenes work – that we could share all the hard work that makes Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival such a success.
Next, we built a photo gallery on our website just for the preview shots, and we’d love to see your photos as well! Parents and teachers – if you have photos from rehearsals or from dress rehearsals, share them with us. We’ll collect them all and add them to our gallery. You can email them to spvnews@severnaparkvoice.com.
So, what made a believer of me? I’ll save the review for the April issue, when we’ll publish a full story and photos from the actual show.
I can only say that from the second the Village People hit the stage with a rousing (and funny) rendition of “In the Navy,” I knew this show went way beyond the typical high school song and dance production.
Make sure to check out our gallery – and don’t forget, you can link your favorite photos directly to your Facebook page.
