Explore HERSTORY In Anne Arundel County

To celebrate Women’s History Month, the Anne Arundel County Democratic Women’s Club (AACDWC) is inviting the community to learn about the county’s “herstory.”

“I’ve lived in Anne Arundel County for 10 years, but it’s a very old county, so I know there’s a lot of history I don’t know about, and I’m excited to hear about it from a woman’s perspective,” said Alexandra Matiella Novak, the club’s representative for District 7.

HERSTORY presents a panel discussion moderated by District 33 Delegate Heather Bagnall. The panel features Janice Hayes-Williams, who is an Annapolis historian and works in the county executive’s office, and Amara Chaudry, who is on the Anne Arundel County Muslim Council.

“I’m looking forward to learning more about our county’s history from a woman’s perspective,” said Stacy Korbelak, the outgoing president of the AACDWC. “I don’t think we really get to study our county’s history that much. I didn’t go to school in Anne Arundel County, so I learn it as I live here. I’m looking forward to hearing from people who have been here and have a perspective I just might not have heard.”

This is the third annual HERSTORY. Last year’s event featured then-gubernatorial candidate Krish Vignarajah, as the theme was women running for office. Before that, Emerge Maryland founder Martha McKenna spoke at the inaugural event.

“This year, we’re focusing more on history of women in Anne Arundel County because you don’t hear much about the way women have shaped the community of Anne Arundel County and the roles they have played throughout the history of our county,” Matiella Novak said.

Though the event is organized by the AACDWC, it is open for anyone to attend.
“The only thing we’re really focused on is making sure we’re inclusive, and we communicate the diversity of our history and the diversity of women throughout our history,” Matiella Novak said. “We’re not focused on any particular subset of politics.”

HERSTORY will be held at the Severna Park Community Center on Saturday, March 24. Light refreshments will be served before the panel discussion. Tickets are $20, and the price includes membership to the AACDWC. Tickets can be purchased on the Facebook event or through Eventbrite by searching for HERSTORY.
