SPHS Earns Sixth Place At District Duals

By Amy Russell
During the two-day District V Dual meet, Severna Park took sixth place overall, but not before feeling the sweet victory of topping cross-town rival Broadneck, which wound up finishing in second place overall.
Severna Park versus Broadneck was the final contest of the meet. The Falcons struggled early but managed to step it up in the later rounds in route to a 37-33 win.

Broadneck’s Brady Ruppert got things started by pinning Park’s Wade Russell in 2:50 in the 171-pound class. Severna Park forfeited the next two matches, both the 189- and 215-pound weight classes to Ian Marinacci and Dallas Truelove, respectively.
Andre Haushalter earned the first official weight class win for the Falcons by forfeit in the 285-pound class. Park’s early struggles continued though when Connor Joyce, in the 103-pound class, pinned Ryan Langlois in 42 seconds. Then Broadneck’s Rowen Belch eluded a pin with just one second to go to come out of the 112-pound class with a 9-8 decision over Jacob Duty. Collin Harrell of Broadneck won by forfeit in the 119-pound class before Severna Park really got it going.

Halfway through the round Willie Cramer turned the momentum by pinning Ben Smalls in 2:52 in the 125-pound class. Then Scott Myers defeated Chris Cichielo, 14-4, in a major decision. Mike DiSanti and Nick DiSanti produced 7-3 and 6-2 decisions over Chris Evens and John Walker, respectively, to keep the Falcon streak alive.
Wrestling at 145, Sam Ziff pinned Mike Bohlman in 3:52; Mikio Manuel, 152, topped Eric Polsinelli 6-0; and Jeremy Hendrickson sealed Severna Park’s win by pinning Matthew Jacobsen in 3:19.
Although the win over Broadneck was the most satisfying for the Falcons, it was only one in a series of four that Park produced at Duals. In the first event of the two-day tournament, Severna Park defeated Atholton High, 33-31, the closest score of the meet. Myers (125) led the way for the Falcons pinning his opponent in 3:03. Ziff also pinned the competition, in an impressive 46 seconds. Hendrickson (160) chipped in with a 7-5 decision, Langlois (103), Quincy Young (215), and Nick DiSanti (130) also added to the Falcons’ win.
Severna Park won its second match of the event over Howard by an even bigger margin, 43-33, by posting five pins. Myers tallied his in 1:18, Ziff got another in 2:18, Hendrickson’s took 2:52, Wade Russell took down his man in 2:32, and Pedro Menchaca pinned another Howard wrestler in 3:56. Mike DiSanti also contributed to the win with a major decision, 15-2, and Nick DiSanti defeated his opponent 5-1. Andre Haushalter forced a forfeit.

Following losses to Glenelg and Oakland Mills, Severna Park righted the ship with a big win over Long Reach, 72-6, that included 9 pins and three wins by forfeit. Ziff, Manuel, Allen, Hendrickson, Taylor, Duty, Myers, Mike DiSanti and Ian Vaillant pinned the competition.
Severna Park fell, 42-27, to Mount Hebron before finishing the event with the win over the Bruins.
