The Green Hornets Bulldogs Pee Wee Field Hockey team secured a first-place division finish this season with an undefeated 9-0-1 record. Playing as a team for the first time, the mixed range of talent came together nicely as the Severna Park Bulldogs blew through the striking circle pee-wee league competition one by one in a season nothing short of remarkable.
I only knew three of the girls going in, one of them being my daughter, said head coach John Gremillion, who directed the team with assistance from coach Stephen Cleary. It was really a wildcard of how they would gel. I didnt really know what to expect
I certainly had no idea wed go undefeated.
But week after week the Bulldogs proved to be a powerhouse field hockey team, defeating the St. Marys Wild Blueberries, the DAA Green, Slade Green, St. Marys Sharks and a fellow Severna Park team - the Green Hornet Blue Devils in route to 10 consecutive wins to clinch first place and the division crown.
The girls clicked immediately, said Gremillion. They worked really hard and they definitely played really good, hard, aggressive field hockey.
Not only had the girls never played together, but at least a third of the team had never played field hockey before, creating an extremely diverse range of experience. Though thats not unusual for a team in the pee-wee level, Gremillion said he was impressed with the way the group of third and fourth graders bonded together so quickly.
Near the end of the season they really worked together as a team and not just a bunch of players on the field, said Gremillion. It was fantastic. Usually in sports, especially in this age group you win some and you lose some, but we kind of came out of the gates really fast and really set some high standards. It was a great season.
The Bulldogs powerful offense, led by top scorers Sydney Kirchenheiter, Kayla Minton and Erin Seibel, produced an impressive 53 goals throughout the 10 game season - a very impressive 5.3 goals per game average.
On the other end of the field, Rachel Horning, Abby Monaco, Elizabeth ONeil and goalkeepers Sydney Cleary and Jocelyn Gremillion formed a rock solid defense that allowed only nine goals less than one per contest. Utility players Isabella Blumenberg, Amanda Beohme, Maggie Bolgiano, Sarah Manley, Grace Mills, Emme Sayers helped fuel the winning squad.
