The Green Hornets Junior A field hockey team got its season started on a winning note on August 25 with a 2-0 victory over visiting Lake Shore at Severna Park High School.

A first-half goal by Noel Stefancik staked Severna Park to an early 1-0 lead, and the Green Hornets applied steady pressure throughout the remainder of the half. Grace Moran bookended the game late in the second half by converting a corner insert for a goal and the final 2-0 margin. Goalkeeper Amanda Giebels anchored a shutout defensive performance by the Green Hornets, who took advantage of a shorthanded Lake Shore team and maintained possession in the attacking third of the field for the majority of the game.

Now 1-0 in county play in the Anne Arundel Recreation and Parks Junior Elite division, Severna Park’s team of Stefnacik, Moran, Giebels, Alyssa Chung, Sydney Day, Madeline Lancione, Victoria Miller, Vivian Miller, Sydney Owens, Hanna Pope, Kelsey Rowe, Libby Russell, Carmen Saviano, Sophia Urrea, Maya Vernugopal, Emma Weber, Paige Weinberg and Jessica Wilson has aspirations to play well and earn results throughout the fall.

Asked about the goal for the season, the girls replied simply and in unison: “Win.”

“The goal is to make it to the championship and win,” added Chung, noting positives from the season-opening defeat of Lake Shore. “We worked together as a team. We worked hard and kept our heads up no matter what happened. We passed the ball well and really moved it.”

The Green Hornets are coached by Robyn Formica, Meredith Weber, Sherrie Day and Katie Owens.

Sydney Day provided key insight as to what will power the Green Hornets’ success moving forward.

“We all trust each other as teammates,” Day said.
