Remember when kids made simple fishing rods out of tree limbs and walked to the nearest creek, sat down on the bank and tried to catch fish? Those days were fun and exciting, especially when you caught a fish with your makeshift rod. Pasadena has many nice streams running through its communities, making fishing popular sport for all types of kids.

On June 8 from 7:30am to 11:30am at Downs Park, the Pasadena Sportfishing Group is collaborating with the Lake Shore-Severna Park Rotary Club to hold a fishing derby for children with special needs. Both organizations want to take advantage of the beautiful setting at the Downs Park pier and bring a fishing event to those kids, ages 4 through 16. Parents and friends will enjoy the summer weather and do something their special needs child may not have done before: fish!

Volunteers will assist kids with getting worms on their hooks and share tips on how to cast and pull in the fish. The Pasadena Sportfishing Group will stock the waters around the pier with fish in advance. No promises, but the goal of the event is for the special needs children to enjoy the experience and maybe catch a fish!

Registration is based on a first come, first serve basis for the first 75 registrants. The last day to register is May 30. There is a $5 registration fee, which will be returned on the day of the event. Also, each child will receive a new rod and reel of their own to use and keep.

The children will meet the Pasadena Sportfishing Group's famous mascot, Roxy Rockfish, who will have lunch with the children. All event participants will get into the park free.
