Made In Maryland Festival Offers Fun Day On The Chesapeake

Posted

Maryland is known for its affinity for Edgar Allan Poe and for sprinkling Old Bay on every type of food, but the state is also home to unique artisans, entertainers and wineries. Much of that creativity will be on display during the third annual Made In Maryland Festival at Kurtz’s Beach (2070 Kurtz Avenue) from 11:00am to 5:00pm on Sunday, May 5.

The family event draws more than 2,500 people each year to enjoy a day of relaxation, games, food, live music, jousting, and arts and crafts, all while basking in the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay.

Kurtz’s Beach event planner Ashley Mason, a member of the Kurtz family, emphasized that families with children will have plenty to do. Kids will have fun in the moon bounce, at the petting zoo or the face painting booth as well as listening to stories by the Chesapeake Mermaid.

More than 120 vendors will feature items ranging from woodworking, painting, metal works, handmade soaps, jewelry, honey, photography, and hand-blown glass. There will even be a live glass-blowing demonstration.

Visitors can try their hand at a Splash City golf range with targets in the water. To make it even more special, the balls are biodegradable with fish food in the middle.

Food trucks will provide brick oven pizza, seafood (including raw bar foods), Mexican fare, pasta and lots of sweets, like snowballs, cookies, caramels and chocolates.

Entertainment includes music by Southern Charm, which is a country and classic rock cover band, and The Brian Farley Band, which performs rock, pop, reggae and country.

Also on hand will be the Maryland Jousting Tournament Association, The Baltimore Hon Hive, Charm City Roller Girls, The Chesapeake Mermaid, and the Dun-Pikin Farm Petting Zoo.

Kurtz’s Beach is an 86-year-old Pasadena institution that was known to many as a beach destination where families created fun memories. With the Made In Maryland Festival in the spring and Wine on the Water in the fall, Kurtz’s Beach is inviting former guests and new generations to enjoy a community landmark.

“It’s all about the community,” Mason said. “We want to continue that heritage and be able to give back to the community.”

Tickets are $15 for adults and free for kids 12 and under. Proceeds support the Chesapeake Bay Trust Foundation, a nonprofit grant-making organization dedicated to improving the watersheds of the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland Coastal Bays and the Youghiogheny River; and Hancock’s Resolution, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve, protect and promote the unique historical aspects of the Pasadena farm for historical and educational purposes.

Tickets for the rain-or-shine festival are available at www.madeinmarylandfest.com or at the gate.
