When Michelle “Mickey” Caporlette and her family moved from California to Severna Park in 1997, she immediately began searching for ways to become active in her new community.
“I like the feeling of giving back to the community where I live,” she said. “That just seems natural and right to me.”
Once her children began school at St. John’s, Caporlette began working part-time as a staffing manager for a local Technology Solutions branch. But she still felt the need to be more connected within her new neighborhood. With two kids at the school, it didn’t take long for the opportunity to arise.

“I was raised by the belief that many hands make light work, and with two kids active at the school, I was always around… so I figured, why not lend a hand while I’m at it?,” she recalled.
Before she knew it Caporlette had been nominated and elected president of the Parent Teacher Partnership Executive Board. Her duties as president included promoting open communication among the parents, teachers, and administration, providing parents and teachers with information to aid in all aspects of education, growth, and development, and coordinating parental support to the school through activities, social functions and fund raisers.
“We usually organize about 10 events a year,” said Caporlette. “We have a very active parent group at St. John’s.”
Even though Caporlette, who is known fondly as “Mickey” around the community, stepped down from her role as president of the Parent Teacher Partnership three years ago, she remains active at the school in all ways possible.
“I help out with anything and everything really,” she noted with a chuckle. “But the school’s annual Science Fair, which happens each January, is an event that I really put a lot of time and enthusiasm into.”
The much-anticipated yearly Science Fair involves coordinating the schedules of between 85 to 100 judges, setting up and breaking down, and successfully promoting the event.
Katherine Borsella, a teacher at St. John’s, commends Caporlette for diligently working “behind the scenes” each year on the Science Fair.
“She has sacrificed a great amount of time to assist me with our annual Science Fair. She, with the help of her friends, organized all the judges who volunteer their time,” commented Borsella.
Outside the school year, Caporlette is quick to lend a hand when the need arises.
“Over the summer, Mickey brought her sons to the school to work on our aquarium during the school’s downtime. She has taken her boys to purchase needed supplies for the tank as well as purchase additional fish to add to its beauty. She also brought the boys to work on the school pond, again providing the needed maintenance. There truly is nothing that she won’t do for us,” stated Borsella.
“Mickey is always ready to help with a good work. Nothing is ever too much trouble for her,” shared Principal Sister Linda Larsen.
Now with a 7th grader at St. John’s and a 9th grader at Mount St. Joseph, Caporlette plans on helping at the school for as long as she’s able.
“I love living in this community, and it’s in my core values to lend a hand. My ultimate hope is that my kids will learn to do the same,” she concluded.
