Severna Park High School has hired Mike Wright as the new head coach of the Falcons’ varsity football program.

Severna Park athletic director Dave Lanham announced the hiring in a press release sent to local media on May 8.

Wright replaces Will Bell, who left the program this spring after four years in the head coach role to become the head coach at Hammond High School closer to his residence in Howard County.

Wright has served as the Falcons’ JV football head coach for the past seven years and has coached in the Severna Park football program for 10 years.

“Mr. Wright is extremely knowledgeable in the sport, particularly within this community and here at SPHS,” Lanham’s statement read. “He has been very successful coaching for 10 years in our program on the JV staff, the last 7 serving as our Head JV Football Coach. Severna Park High School is pleased to have Mr. Wright join the proud tradition of excellence at SPHS as the newly named Head Coach for Football.”

Wright expressed gratitude and excitement in assuming the role of the school’s varsity football coach.

“I am honored and appreciative to take the lead for this program, for this high school and in this community,” said Wright. “Over the years I’ve devoted myself to coach football in Severna Park and progressed through every age group to get to this point, so to have this opportunity, as challenging as it will be, is one I simply could not pass up. I believe in the young men on this team and what they can accomplish. I know there’s some catch-up to do for planning and hard work ahead for the team and staff to get where we want to be, but I can’t wait to get started.”
