Musician Blends Folk, Classical Elements On New Album

Severna Park singer-songwriter Kate Caldwell is thrilled to release her new album, “Blue Jean Day,” featuring several of her original songs and a number of favorites by Joni Mitchell, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Sting, Gordon Bok and other musicians. Originally trained as a classical musician, Caldwell returned to her folk roots during the pandemic.

“The long hours during COVID offered an opportunity to pick up my guitar again and dig deeply into the song arrangements of some of my favorite singers,” Caldwell said. “I continued to study guitar via Zoom and began writing my own songs - much to my surprise!”

Caldwell has enjoyed an active dual career in music and fundraising, where locally she served as campaign consultant to the Boys and Girls Club at Wiley H. Bates Heritage Park and St. Anne’s School of Annapolis. She currently serves on the board of the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County and is a member of the Anne Arundel Women Giving Together. Her a cappella vocal trio, Trinitas, sang for 10 years at the Washington National Cathedral and produced three CDs.

“It has been great fun meeting local acoustic guitarists and songwriters, a number of whom have a classical background as I do,” Caldwell said. “We all learn from one another.”

The official album release concert will be on April 14 at 3:00pm at St. Margaret’s Fellowship Hall, located at 1601 Pleasant Plains Road in Annapolis. Joining Caldwell will be Ernie Tucker, a professor at the Naval Academy, on guitar, mandolin, banjo and bass; and Brock Holmes, a teacher and performer in Washington, D.C., on guitar and piano. A reception will follow the concert, with CDs for sale. All profits will be in support of Save the Children to highlight the needs of this vulnerable group throughout the world.
