Nonprofit Group Orphan Grain Train Celebrates “Lights For The Holidays”

Posted

Orphan Grain Train recently sent two box trucks of supplies to people in the Carolinas who were impacted by Hurricane Florence. Volunteers also packed a container bound for South Sudan this month. The supplies in that container will help create an eight-room school for 600 students in the town of Panpandiar.

Now, with the holiday season underway, volunteers are excited about the Lights for the Holidays project to provide access to clean light for people in Liberia and South Sudan, in areas that have no electrical grid. Volunteers hope to accomplish this with a shipment of Luci lights, solar lights that allow hospitals, health clinics and businesses to stay open past sunset.

A Luci light in a home means children can read, study and play longer. The elderly can move at night with greater safety. Furthermore, families can support themselves in an environment free of toxic, polluting and safety hazards like kerosene and firewood in these desperately poor areas. Thus far, Luci lights have helped more than 2.6 million people in more than than 100 countries.

The Luci light is bright, compact and portable. It can last 24 hours on a single charge and up to 75 lumens on the brightest setting. It is completely solar, clean and reliable. Also, it is affordable.

The Maryland branch of Orphan Grain Train has a goal of supplying thousands of these lights to people in Liberia and South Sudan. A donation of $10 buys a Luci light and allows a family to have clean, sustainable light in their home.

If you would like to help create the gift of light, send your check to Orphan Grain Train at 621 East-West Boulevard, Millersville, MD 21108.
