Sowinski, Parker and Wasserman Lead Falcons To Victory

By Amy Russell
The Severna Park swim team out-performed themselves, and the rest of the competition, on Friday, February 4, at the Anne Arundel County Swim Championships. The girls team took the crown for the fifth year in a row, while the boys, who tied with Broadneck for the title last year, earned their first outright crown.
“We are flying high after winning both the county championships,” said head coach Mike McTammany.
The girls team, which has been impressive all season long, won every single event with the exception of the 100-yard backstroke.

Katelyn Sowinski and Katie Parker led the ladies with first place finishes in two individual events, each setting a record in one. Sowinski took first in both the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle, where she broke the county record.
Parker clinched the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-meter breaststroke, for which she set a new county and team record.
Sowinski and Parker were also part of two winning relay teams, along with Jenna Kirchoff, Molly Gallant, Marissa Hand and Caroline Evans. Kirchoff impressed taking first place in the 500-yard freestyle event, Gallant took first in the 50-yard freestyle, and Hand swam first in the 100-yard freestyle.

“Other key contributors throughout the season,” added McTammany, “have been junior Courtney Stoner and sophomores Olivia Roy and Haley Hutcheson.”
On the boys side Sean Brant, Kevin Huntley, Jared Wasserman and John Bachosky set a record, and the tone of the meet, in the first event of the night, the 200-yard medley relay.
“Our boys team relies on its depth and contributions from all swimmers,” said McTammany.
Bennett Bean, Brant, Wasserman and Huntley closed the event as strong as they started setting a second record in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
In between the two, Wasserman led the boys team with a win in the 100-yard butterfly and a third place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. Huntley set a new team record in the boys 200-yard freestyle event where he finished second with a time of 1:49.39.

Going into the county championship, both Severna Park’s boys and girls teams were undefeated, 11-0, a tough feat considering the tight competition at the last regular-season meet of the season. The talented Falcons went on to defeat Broadneck, Annapolis and South River in a competition that pitted the most elite county teams against each other.
During the meet, the girls team racked up 183 points to edge out Broadneck, 142, Annapolis, 110, and South River 82. The boys squeaked past Broadneck, 160-143, in a meeting that was so close fans and spectators were prepared for anything.
In the championship meet just seven days later, the Falcons proved, yet again, their capabilities while the Bruins put up a fight. The Severna Park girls won with a decided 295 points over Broadneck’s 226. Annapolis came in with 214, South River 182, and the rest of the teams scored fewer than 100 points. On the boys side, Severna Park won by a mere six-point decision, 245-239, over Broadneck. South River, 205, came in third and Annapolis, 170, was fourth.
The regional competition is slated for February 19, giving the swimmers just two weeks to prepare.
“There,” said McTammany, “both teams will begin the defense of their 2010 state championships.”
