Question of the Month: Severna Park High School Marching Band

Posted

Each month, the Severna Park Voice poses a question to a local student group. This month, students from the Severna Park High School marching band answered the question:

“How has music helped you grow as a person?”

It helps me feel at peace.

Anderson B., Trumpet

The SPHS band has provided me an inclusive space to grow in spite of my muscular dystrophy. It’s allowed me meet countless friends who don’t view me as different.

Andrew S., Tenor Sax

It has helped me build friendships and taught me life lessons.

Blake B., Trumpet

Music has offered me a form of expression.

Colson J., Alto Saxophone

Music has helped me feel like a part of a group and helped me make more friends. Music and flags help me express myself positively.

Emilie S., Color Guard

Music has introduced me to a whole new language that can be enjoyed by any person at any time, no matter what race, gender, or nationality. It has also opened a whole new, creative chapter full of new friends in my life.

Eric B., Sousaphone

It has put some of the best friends I have and has helped me think methodically about everything I do. It has also given me work ethic to accomplish all that I am required to do.

Jamin H., Bass Drum

It has let me meet a lot of great people and allowed me to build my teambuilding skills.

Lana D., Clarinet

Music has not only helped me better understand concepts of confidence and discipline - it also brought out my individuality. Through music, I have learned hundreds of names, thousands of words, and millions of ways to improve myself every day.

Lauren H., Synthesizer

Music has helped me through so much. It makes me have to work as part of a group, and it requires cooperation and teamwork.

Mickey P., Marimba/Xylophone

I can express myself through music that impacts others in a profound way. Music has allowed me new experiences with friends and opportunities that have helped me grow.

Mike R., Alto Saxophone

Music has helped me meet great people while doing something fun. It is also just very relaxing and helps me take my mind off things.

Rebecca W., Vibraphone/Bells

Music is the language of emotion. As such, to play well, one must be in tune with their feelings and thoughts to better project the message. Music has helped me get better accustomed to my feelings and maintain more control over the extremes of the psyche.

Ricardo C., Drum Major

Through music, and more specifically marching band, I have learned to come out of my shell and have made many friends. Everyone here is like one big family.

Sydney A., Marimba

Music has helped me be more social. It has also helped me gain better concentration and focus.

Tommy B., Alto Saxophone
