Severna Park Baseball Advances To State Final, 6-4 Over C.H. Flowers

Posted

The Severna Park baseball team will play for a state title.

The Falcons sealed that opportunity on Wednesday, getting an all-time clutch start from George Lesher, six runs from the offense and enough mettle down the stretch to defeat C.H. Flowers 6-4 at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda.

Lesher, normally the team’s catcher, was masterful in the biggest start of his life, going six full innings and allowing zero earned runs and three hits with four strikeouts on 98 pitches against state-tournament debutants C.H. Flowers.

The Falcons (21-3) got two-hit games from Luke Guy and Kody Milton, and RBI hit by Lesher and a four-run third inning that saw Severna Park take a lead and never let it go. Guy finished with two hits, two runs, an RBI and a walk; Milton was 2 for 4 with a run; and Lesher was 1 for 3 with an RBI hit and a walk. The Falcons got hits from Cameron Clark, AJ Weyant and Garrett Whitaker; an RBI from Nick Horgan; and runs scored by pinch runners Cullen Figlioli and Garrett Weiss.

With the Falcons leading 6-2, Milton came on to close in the seventh, and though Severna Park surrendered a pair of runs, they survived C.H. Flowers’ comeback and closed the game to advance to the state final for the first time since this year’s seniors were freshmen in 2015.

The Falcons will be making their sixth appearance in the state final in this their eighth state tournament appearance.

Severna Park will play Howard, which defeated Bethesda-Chevy Chase in Wednesday’s other semifinal, in the 4A state championship game at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen on Friday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. Howard defeated the Falcons in last year’s state semifinals.

Tickets for the state final can be purchased for $10 in advance online.
