Severna Park Boys Win Medals At Thanksgiving Throwdown

Residents of Severna Park and Gambrills were medal winners at the The Good Fight Thanksgiving Throwdown submission-only jiu-jitsu tournament in Millersville on November 10. Mitchell and Patrick Smith of Severna Park and Dominic Lagana of Gambrills were the competitors. They are martial arts students at Md Ultimate Martial Arts Academy in Pasadena, where they learn kickboxing, hapkido, and RCJ Machado Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Their coach was James “Jay” Elbourn, who trains under professor Carlos Machado.

A 14-year-old, Mitchell won two gold medals in the intermediate 140-pound division, in gi and no-gi matches. He submitted his opponent with kimura and armbar in gi matches. In the no-gi match, he finished with a rear-naked choke to armbar submission for the win.

Twelve-year-old Patrick competed in beginner no-gi matches and received a gold medal in the 98-pound division. He submitted his opponents with americana key locks.

Dominic, in the intermediate 117-pound division, competed in gi and no-gi matches. In gi, the 14-year-old got a silver medal and submitted his first opponent by rear-naked choke. He lost to his second opponent by an americana key lock. In no-gi, he won his match for third place with an armbar submission.
