What A Day: Severna Park Sweeps Doubleheader To Win 4A East

Posted

Monday belonged fully to the Severna Park softball team.

The Falcons scored a pair of wins, beating Glen Burnie 5-0 and South River 3-1 to defy all the logistical challenges a week of bad weather presented and claim their spot in the state’s final four.

Marissa Heuer pitched an astounding 14 innings to get two wins, Abby Becker caught both games, the Falcon offense stepped up, and Severna Park is celebrating its first region crown since 2006.

Last week’s weather forced multiple game postponements, necessitating Monday’s region tripleheader, played at Severna Park. The Falcons played Glen Burnie at 3 p.m. while South River, having defeated North Point at Severna Park in a game that started at 1 p.m., stood by waiting to play the winner.

Severna Park took care of business against the Gophers. Campbell Kline was 2 for 4 with two RBIs; Jessie Smith hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning as one of her two hits and batted in three runs; Emma Hall had two base hits; Becker, Emily Summers and Emily Gabbard added hits; and Heuer went the distance, scattering six hits and striking out seven.

Kline’s first hit against Glen Burnie was her 60th of the season, making her the new state record holder for most hits in a single season; the previous single-season state record of 59 was set by Lindsey Schmeiser of Northern High School (Calvert County) in 2012.

On to the region final against South River after a short break, and Heuer again was dynamite in the circle, allowing only one run on four hits and striking out nine as Severna Park did enough offensively to support her and come away 3-1 winners over the Seahawks.

Kline scored two runs and again had two hits as she extended her new state record to 63 total, while Smith (two hits), Heuer (one hit, one RBI), Becker (one hit), Gabbard (one hit) and Kylie Dingess (one hit, two RBIs) got the job done against the Seahawks.

Severna Park has less than 24 hours to recover before squaring off with C.H. Flowers in the state semifinals at Bachman Park at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Update: More rain on Tuesday has forced the postponement of the state semifinals. Severna Park will now play CH Flowers at Bachman Park on Wednesday, May 23 at 7 p.m.
