“Annie” To Spread Sunshine At CTA

Posted

Leapin' lizards! “Annie,” one of the world's best-loved musicals, will take stage at Children's Theatre of Annapolis from May 13-22. Based on the irrepressible comic strip heroine, and with equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan Annie charms everyone's hearts, despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. She is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City orphanage that is run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan.

With the help of the other girls in the orphanage, Annie escapes to the wondrous world of New York City. In adventure after fun-filled adventure, Annie foils Miss Hannigan's evil machinations … and even befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt!

“I have always loved Annie,” said CTA President Michelle Bruno. “It’s the classic story of the intrepid orphan, showing that with kindness, love and hope, the sun will indeed come out tomorrow.”

“Annie” features 26 local performers ages 8 to 14. In her first musical, Addison Bartels, of Bowie, stars as the plucky orphan, while Justin Porath, of Annapolis, takes on the role of the well-to-do Daddy Warbucks. Layla Bunch, of Washington, D.C., performs as Warbucks’ assistant, Grace, while Amaya Shannon, of Gambrills, plays the malevolent Miss Hannigan.

The show is directed by Atticus Cooper Boidy, who last directed “The Addams Family” in November 2021 at CTA. He is joined by veteran choreographer Jason Kimmell and new-to-CTA music director Matthew Garvey.

“Annie” opens on Friday, May 13, at CTA’s theater, located at 1661 Bay Head Road in Annapolis. Performances will take place at 7:00pm Fridays, 11:00am and 4:00pm Saturdays, and 2:00pm Sundays through May 22. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for students age 12 and under, seniors and military. Group discounts are available. Purchase tickets at cta.ticketleap.com.
