As president and CEO of the nonprofit Bello Machre, Robert Ireland has a strong purpose.
“Our mission is to provide a lifetime of loving care and opportunities for the people we serve,” he said, referring to people with developmental disabilities. “That lifetime of loving care is what helps me get out of bed in the morning.”
He had no trouble getting out of bed on the morning of June 14. He was especially excited because Bello Machre was hosting the 34th annual Every Step Counts fundraiser at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold and Dutterer Park in Westminster.
Both events celebrated positive energy and good vibes as attendees walked, rode bikes and showed off their dance moves.
As of June 18, the nonprofit received over $200,000 in donations from Every Step Counts, with 350 attendees at the Anne Arundel County event and over 100 in Carroll County.
Organizers marveled at the success of the event, which had humble beginnings as a Flag Day parade.
“We were happy if we raised $10,000 (back then),” Ireland said. “It’s turned out to be a nice event thanks to the support of the community and our sponsors.”
All that support is not something Ireland and his team take for granted. Still, the financial need is as great as it has ever been.
“Fifty years ago, roughly 5% of infants born would have some disability,” Ireland said. “Now, the infant born at six months is surviving. People are living longer.”
Bello Machre serves more than 200 adults who live in 56 community homes, and it supports more than 200 children and adults in their own homes or family residences.
The average age of a Bello Machre beneficiary was 20 years old when Ireland joined the nonprofit in 1979. Now, the average age is 57.
Funds help Bello Machre with medical equipment and community inclusion activities that are fun, challenging and meaningful.
“Donors and sponsors are critical,” Ireland said. “State and federal funding provide a foundation.”
With potential Medicaid cuts looming, Ireland and his leadership team are nervous about the future. But if Every Step Counts proved anything, it’s that Severna Park, Arnold and the greater Anne Arundel County community always rally around an important cause.
That support reinforces his purpose and keeps him getting out of bed in the morning.
“I truly feel blessed,” said Ireland, who once lived in the Shipley’s Choice neighborhood and now resides in Annapolis. “Every day, I’m surrounded by people who are loving and kind.”
