Benfield Corridor Study

Posted

During a June meeting, the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works shared some startling statistics about the Benfield Road corridor from Veterans Highway to Evergreen Road.

  • Over the last five years, 176 crashes have been reported, 34% of which resulted in injury.
  • More than 40% of vehicles travel 6 miles per hour or more over the speed limit.
  • Pedestrian facilities are available along only 45% of the corridor (both sides combined).

Following several stakeholder meetings, the first public community meeting was held on June 4 for the Benfield Corridor Study project. Construction is not funded yet, but this feasibility study examines current conditions so the county and state might identify possible improvements for pedestrian and bike traffic, and vehicle traffic safety. Potential improvements include shared-use paths; sidewalks; and additional bicycle lanes, speed feedback signs and high-visibility crosswalks.

The planning phase will continue through November 2025. To learn more, go to www.aacounty.org/public-works/engineering and click the “Capital Projects” link.
