On Tuesday the U.S. Navy Blue Angels left spectators awestruck during a rehearsal demonstration in preparation for today’s official air show. Although the elite naval aviators were not accompanied by their iconic C-130J Super Hercules transport affectionately known as Fat Albert – it is undergoing maintenance in England – the performance featured a new aircraft prior to the Blue Angels: An F35, widely considered the most advanced fighter in the world. The F35B is classified as an STOVL (short takeoff and vertical landing), and the jet’s pilot demonstrated its ability to hover in place at a low altitude over the Severn River. Weather permitting, tomorrow’s air show will begin with the F35 demonstration at 1:30pm followed by the Blue Angels’ team of F/A-18 Super Hornets at 2:00pm.
