In each half of Friday’s region second-round playoff game against Glen Burnie, there was a moment where Broadneck’s football team was on its heels, in need of some momentum. In each instance, the cavalry came calling.
A pair of pick-sixes from Tyrin Chinn-Thompson and timely momentum plays from offense and special teams helped the Bruins overcome Glen Burnie 54-28 and advance to the state quarterfinals for the fourth straight season.
Broadneck closed the season with straightforward wins over North County and Severn Run, and then they followed that up with a first-round bye. Essentially, a month’s worth of preparation went into this game following a loss against Annapolis.
That made it hard to get the juices flowing early, and an early hit in the mouth made things even more challenging.
“That first possession was one of the worst possessions we’ve had in a long time,” said Broadneck coach Rob Harris. “It took a while to settle in, but they did, and that’s against a good team. Glen Burnie’s real good.”
The first burst came late in the first quarter, when the Bruins answered Glen Burnie’s opening touchdown with a quick-fire drive that ended with the first of two Ian Mauldin touchdowns.
Then, the ensuing kick was booted high and short by Dylan Jordan. It bounced at the Gopher 20-yard line and kicked back toward Broadneck’s Kobe Owen, who fell on it to give them a second straight possession.
After C.J. Watkins ran into the end zone to give the Bruins the lead, Chinn-Thompson jumped a route on the next play from scrimmage and raced 35 yards to the house to put Broadneck up 21-7. That sequence led to five straight scores for the Bruins.
“It felt just like St. Mary’s,” said Chinn-Thompson, referring to the season opener in which he returned an interception for a touchdown. “All the way down to getting two picks in practice yesterday. We had film and we were ready for what we needed to do. It was hard to get the juice going, but we got momentum when we needed it.”
Glen Burnie answered after halftime and clawed back to 35-28, racking up two long drives and wearing down the Broadneck defense. But Mauldin, who had been bottled up for most of the night, popped a 56-yard touchdown run on the first play of Broadneck’s second second-half possession, and Glen Burnie never scored again.
Aaron Foote tacked on a short touchdown run, and Chinn-Thompson capped things off with his second defensive score of the night, this one from 45 yards.
Mauldin had 164 total yards on 18 touches, while Joey Smargissi and Mari Hayes both also scored.
Broadneck gets a home game in the state quarterfinals, when Northwest comes to town next Friday at 6:00pm. It’s a rematch of last year’s state quarterfinal at Northwest, which Broadneck won 21-20.
“Just excited,” Chinn-Thompson said. “Excited to have one more at ‘The Den.’”
