Broadneck Girls Lacrosse Brushes Aside South River For Region Title

The two-time defending champion Broadneck girls lacrosse team sent their decorated seniors off their home field for the final time as winners.

Lexi Dupcak scored four times, Lilly Kelley added three, and the Bruins brushed aside South River 15-6 on Monday to win the 4A East Region II championship.

Broadneck took two early yellow-card fouls, but the defense kept South River off the board. The Bruins didn’t take another penalty until two minutes remained in the contest.

On the other hand, Broadneck’s offense was able to capitalize on three successive man-up situations, including two unreleasable penalties, sandwiched around halftime. The first advantage netted an immediate goal, while the first unreleasable yielded three more. In total, Broadneck went from tied to ahead by five and in firm control of the contest.

“Our man-up offense hasn’t been great lately, but we were able to get some things rolling in the first half tonight,” said Broadneck coach Katy Kelley. “We were able to adjust to the way the game was being called and stay out of the box, and we really capitalized on the man-up.”

Olivia Orso also scored three goals for the Bruins, while Lily Trout added two. Sienna Miller, Nora Lopes and Mary Moore also hit the scoresheet, while Megan Shields made nine saves in goal.

Broadneck will continue their three-peat bid in the 4A state quarterfinals on Wednesday at Urbana. The Bruins were the top seed last year as they successfully defended their title; this year, they will be seeded sixth.

They will lean on their playoff experience to ensure they don’t diminish the moment, while simultaneously not making the moment too big to handle.

“It makes (the path) more complicated, but it can be a good thing,” Katy Kelly said. “We can’t take anything for granted, and we need to expect everyone we play to be good. Our experience can help us as long as we don’t take it for granted.”
