For the first time in six years, the Broadneck boys soccer team is headed to the states round.
Wilson Banwell scored twice, Braeden Kelly added a goal and an assist, and Broadneck logged a third straight clean sheet as the Bruins beat Annapolis 3-0 to win the 4A East Region II championship.
Kelly opened the scoring 30 minutes in when he took a pass from Ryan Ball, jinked past two defenders and fired past the keeper from close range. Banwell’s first came in the 52nd minute when Jed Meehan headed the ball into his path and he finished on the volley. Later on, Kelly put Banwell through on goal to round out the scoring.
Joe Brenner made two saves in goal and also started the attack leading to the second Broadneck goal.
Broadneck’s last region boys soccer title came in 2018, which was before the regional splits and granted entry to the state semifinal round. The Bruins are seeded fifth in the state quarterfinals and will visit No. 4 Montgomery Blair on Friday at 4:30pm.
Grace Moran scored twice and added an assist, and the Falcons shut out South River for the second time this season to repeat as 3A East Region I champions.
Sydney Day and Hannah Pope also scored, while Ava Zimmerman and Katie Wiseman each added an assist.
Seeded third in the state quarterfinals, the Falcons will host No. 6 Reservoir at 6:00pm Thursday.
Raleigh Kerst’s rebound goal in the second half was enough for the Bruins to take a victory in Leonardtown and repeat as 4A East Region II champions.
Mia Moody made five saves in goal, and Clare Imber added a defensive save to preserve the shutout.
The Bruins are seeded third and will host Montgomery Blair at 6:00pm Friday.
Erin Hussey scored her second goal of the game in the dying seconds of the first overtime period, as the Falcons successfully defended their 3A East Region I championship.
Severna Park holds the No. 1 seed for the state quarterfinal round. They’ll host eighth-seeded Bel Air on Friday at 7:00pm.
