Bruin Girls Complete Regular Season Sweep Of Severna Park

Twelve games had taken place between this season’s two matchups between the Broadneck and Severna Park girls basketball teams.

The second showed much improved squads, almost identically so — and the result proved almost identical.

Behind a potent first-half punch and a final push, Broadneck completed a regular season sweep of rival Severna Park, with the Bruins winning 47-41 on their senior night.

Friday’s game played out much like the first matchup between the two teams, a 46-38 Broadneck win. The Bruins hit first, then the Falcons counterpunched, but Broadneck had enough in the tank to outlast Severna Park’s effort with one final push.

This time, a 15-point halftime lead was enough for the Bruins to see themselves to victory despite a barren spell in the third quarter.

The Bruins got 12 points from Samantha Miller, including nine of the team’s first 11 in the game. Severna Park moved to neutralize Miller, but other players like Katelyn Kearns and Summer Stroop came up big to push the advantage to 15 at the break.

“We’ve got a lot of players who can score the basketball, and when they’re all scoring that’s really good for us, and it’s gratifying to see as a coach,” said Broadneck coach Juan McKinney.

Severna Park (15-2 overall, 8-2 in county play) hit back in the third quarter with ferocious defense, cutting the deficit to five headed into the final period. The teams traded momentum from there, but Broadneck made their lead hold up in the end.

“We really work so hard on the defensive end, and that’s where we put the most of our focus,” said Severna Park forward Ryn Feemster. “We did a pretty good job of that in the third quarter, but that’s a big hole to climb out of against a good team like that.”

Feemster had a game-high 23 points for the Falcons, who saw their 12-game winning streak come to an end.

Mackenzie Wharton added 11 points and London Best had 10 for Broadneck, which pushed their own string of victories to 14 straight.

The Bruins (14-1, 10-0) had to see the final minutes out without their leading Miller, who fouled out late in the game. That set up some anxious moments, but the experienced Bruins kept their nerve and saw it out.

“It was a little stressful, but we have a lot of trust in each other,” said Miller. “I knew that we were going to get it done.”

Next up for Broadneck is a trip to South River on Monday in a battle of county unbeatens. The teams are a combined 29-2, with Broadneck’s only loss coming to St. Mary’s in the season opener and South River’s to Hayfield (Virginia) in a holiday tournament.

Severna Park returns to action on Wednesday when they host Chesapeake.
