Bruins Continue Special Season With Win Over Arundel

Broadneck Girls Head Into County Championship

Posted

The 1989 and 1990 girls basketball teams at Broadneck set a high standard, winning back-to-back state championships. No team since has been able to match the lofty records and accomplishments of those teams.

However, the 2024 team has put together one of the best seasons in school history after wrapping up the regular season with a 65-20 victory over the Arundel Wildcats. With the win, the Bruins (19-2) are tied for first place in the county and will face off with South River in the girls basketball county championship game this Saturday.

Senior Mackenzie Wharton left her own mark on the program, breaking the school record for points in a game with a 37-point effort that included eight 3-pointers. Wharton broke the previous record of 36 points, set by Tammy Brown in 1990. Junior London Best added nine points, while senior Ginger Kerdock added seven points, seven assists and five steals.

The Bruins have earned a first-round bye in the playoffs and will host a region semifinal game on Friday, March 1.
