Broadneck senior Linx Lawless (45-3) finished the season in a perfect way: he won a Class 3A/4A state championship at 165 pounds.
He accomplished his goal after taking fourth last season.
“I think this year, I was stronger and practiced better,” Lawless said of his improvements over last year. “I just think I was a better all-around wrestler.”
Lawless had some tough matches on his way to the title. He topped Ian Tumi of Frederick in the final, 11-7.
In a quarterfinal match, Lawless staged a dramatic comeback. He trailed 3-2. In the final minute against Linganore’s Peyton Pickett, Lawless scored eight consecutive points on a takedown and back points to prevail, 10-3.
Lawless won his other two matches by a pin and tech fall.
“Winning the title mean a lot to me because it was my last match,” Lawless said. “I was thinking, ‘Why not just go out on a good note?’ I am not going to be wrestling in college.”
