The unused bikes in your garage or basement can become valuable transportation for people in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and South Pacific through a simple donation to Bikes for the World. Volunteers will collect used bicycles at Pedal Pushers bike shop in Severna Park on Saturday, August 15, from 10:00am to 1:00pm.
Bikes for the World is a registered nonprofit organization with headquarters and a warehouse in Rockville, Maryland. The organization makes affordable, good-quality, used bicycles available to low-income people in developing countries. These donated bikes provide better transport for work, education and healthcare appointments. In addition, the donated bikes seed bicycle repair and maintenance businesses providing skilled employment.
Over 20 years ago, Ann Jackson partnered with Pedal Pushers owner Rod Reddish to hold the first bike collection in Severna Park, establishing a long-running collaboration with biannual collection events. In memory of Jackson, family members and friends have continued the annual collection with over 2,100 bikes donated to the cause.
Donations of any repairable bike, including those with flat tires or missing seats and pedals, are acceptable. In addition to bicycles, scooters, adult tricycles, unicycles, trail-a-bikes, and most spare parts and accessories are needed. Anyone donating a bike is asked to donate $10 to cover shipping costs. Donation receipts will be provided for the bike’s value plus any cash donations. For more details, visit www.bikesfortheworld.org.
