The first half of Severna Park’s field hockey schedule was nothing short of brutal.
That they sit at 3-3-1 at the midway point bodes well for the team poised to challenge at the business end of the season.
Severna Park started the season with a 5-0 win over River Hill aided by two Piper Desjardins goals, followed by a narrow 4-3 victory over Kent Island in which Grace Redmond netted twice from close range and the Falcons held onto victory.
From there it was off to the annual MAX Field Hockey high school national invitational tournament, where the Falcons split with out-of-state opposition. They lost 5-1 to New Jersey’s Clearview Regional then beat Virginia’s Stafford High 2-1. For her efforts, Sophia Weber was handed second-team all-tournament honors.
The Falcons ended the month with a bumpy three-game stretch as far as the win-loss column, losing 2-1 to longtime power Manchester Valley and then a humbling 6-0 loss to South River. They righted the ship against Notre Dame Prep, however, rallying from behind to earn a 2-2 draw. But all of those tests will pay dividends in November when the Falcons chase another state championship.
Two big tests remain ahead of the postseason: The Falcons are at Crofton on October 1 and host Broadneck on October 13.
