Falcon Football Looking For A Little Extra As Playoffs Loom

Posted

For the Severna Park football team, much of the 2026 season has been a case of almost, but not quite.

The Falcons sit at 3-5 but have come up on the short end of several close contests. After coming up a little short against Crofton in a 22-11 setback where they led at halftime, Severna Park then fell 21-14 to Severn Run and 22-20 to Meade. That was followed by a 39-17 drubbing by Old Mill, before they righted the ship with wins over Arundel (34-26) and North County (42-7) ahead of the season’s finale.

The story of the season has been trying to find enough offense to complement a gritty defense.

The Falcons defense has continued to grind, allowing an average of 22 points per game — removing the two games where they were outclassed by Severn School and Old Mill, it’s 17 per game. But the offense has found tough sledding, averaging around 200 yards of total offense and 20 points per contest.

In the first six games, Severna Park quarterback Ben Greenlee had a hand in all eight of the team’s offensive touchdowns (four rushing, four passing), while the return of Graham Guenther added another dimension. He found the end zone three times against Arundel, twice on the ground and once through the air.

Greenlee has rushed for five scores and leads the team with 198 yards on the ground. He has also thrown for close to 1,000 yards and nine scores, three to Caden Guerra and two each to Brody Pugh and James Malena.

Guerra leads the team with better than 300 receiving yards, and he and Charlie Cavanaugh have both returned an interception for a touchdown. Cavanaugh also has taken a punt back for a score. Both ballhawks have three interceptions on the season. Placekicker Joe Caffiero is perfect on extra points and has missed just two field goal attempts on the season.

The Falcons have one more regular season game, where they’ll look to end a 15-year losing streak to Broadneck. After that, they’ll be on the road for the first round of the playoffs, likely with a rematch against Severn Run or Crofton.
