Severna Park will send at least 13 individuals and three relay teams to the 3A state indoor track and field championships at Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex on February 20, following a strong showing at Monday's 3A Central Region meet.
In the girls competition, Ava Zimmerman won the 500 and 800 meters to qualify in two individual events. Zimmerman led a Falcon top-three sweep in the 800, as Katelyn Wiseman and Harper Wallace also qualified.
Wallace will also participate in two individual events after finishing fifth and hitting the qualifying standard in the 1,600, while Kathryn Murphy also qualified by finishing third. In the 3,200, Josie Kamas won, Lexi Fitzsimmons finished third, and Sydney Davis was sixth, all three advancing to states. Alexa Holt won the pole vault and is also moving on.
Severna Park won the 4x800 relay and finished third in the 4x400 relay, qualifying both to the state meet. The Falcon girls topped the team standings with 100 points, well ahead of Chesapeake.
On the boys side, five individuals and a relay team qualified for the state meet. John McLain won the pole vault, clearing 13 feet even. Caden Lazzor was second in the 3,200, and Cooper Alahverdian also qualified with a ninth-place finish, having eclipsed the state qualifying standard time.
Ben Ghahhari was third and Brenden Woods was fifth in the 1,600, both qualifying for the state meet. The 4x400 relay team finished second and also advanced.
The boys were fourth with 44 team points in a tight race behind runaway leader Digital Harbor. Second place to sixth place were separated by just six points.
Pending results of the 3A West Regional meet, other Falcons may also gain entry to the state meet. The top three finishers in each regional meet, the combined next nine finishers across all regional meets, and anyone else who hit the state qualifying standard at the regional meet will all advance.
