On Friday nights this fall, Severna Park High School has become the place to be.
The Falcons football team, after years of struggling, has turned the corner and is threatening the upper echelons of the 4A/3A ranks. The team enters the final week of the regular season having won six consecutive games, including successive statement wins over Old Mill and Arundel.
The Falcons began the run with a tough win over Crofton and then walloped Severn Run. Their last four games have been all at home, big wins over Meade (44-7) and North County (51-0) sandwiched around the victories over Old Mill (17-14) and Arundel (22-14).
The recipe for success has been simple: a dual-threat quarterback, a solid run game, a stud receiver, and a stingy defense.
Archbishop Spalding transfer Blake Howell is accounting for nearly 200 yards a game between his arm and his legs, while the Falcons are well over 1,000 rushing yards as a team this season, led by Jonathan Wark’s 75.7 per contest.
Cole Cavanaugh has just three touchdown catches and 41 yards receiving per contest, but the catches he makes are important or big time, or both. He recently was featured on ESPN’s “You Got Mossed” segment during “Sunday NFL Countdown” for his highlight-reel grab against Arundel.
Defensively, the Falcons have been stout. Four players have more than 40 tackles: Landon Williams, Logan Moran, Lincoln Fox and Kamari Brown. The ball-hawking secondary has 12 interceptions, led by Charlie Cavanaugh and Michael Queen with three apiece, and the Falcons have recovered 13 fumbles and posted 18 quarterback sacks, led by Noah Croghan’s 12.
The Falcons closed the regular season at Broadneck on October 30, after the Severna Park Voice went to print. A win would likely secure a home playoff game.
