After a thrilling match with Broadneck and a blip against Arundel, Severna Park’s volleyball team has turned it on down the stretch.
The Falcons find themselves competing at the top end of their region standings for the first time in a while, courtesy of a sizable win streak at the right time of the season.
The five-match string featured straight-set wins over Old Mill, Meade, Long Reach and McDonogh, along with a five-set nailbiter over Crofton. They closed the run out with a 3-2 loss against River Hill in their final regular season match.
During that stretch, the Falcons got quality attack play from Lizzie Ranaghan, who had 74 kills in the five matches, including 22 against Crofton. She was backed up by fellow pin hitters Maggie Morgan and Hannah McKinstry, who each posted double figures in at least one match during that stretch. Defensively, Jennifer Hong pulled up 59 digs in the five matches, including 21 against Long Reach.
With the late surge, Severna Park has guaranteed at least one home playoff game. The Falcons will be seeded second for the upcoming 3A East II region playoffs and will host the winner of a match between Old Mill and Stephen Decatur.
The road to the state playoffs still goes through Arundel, though. The Wildcats swept Severna Park on their way to claiming the region’s top seed.
