Green Hornets Overcome Adversity To Win Tournament

With four consecutive victories, the 9U Green Hornets baseball team won the Lake Shore Boys of Summer Tournament last weekend. The squad beat the Mount Airy Bulldogs twice, 13-4 and 12-8; beat the Jarrettsville Hawks 10-1 in the semifinals; and then beat Gambrills Athletic Club 10-0 in the finals.

In the finals, Glenn Mutchler pitched a complete game shutout, striking out four. Connor Mellinger went 2-2 with a triple and three RBIs. The team had 13 hits in only four innings before the mercy rule was used. A ground ball putout by third baseman Cole Herring cinched the win.

The tournament marked the final games of the season for the Green Hornets team, which finished first in the Mid Atlantic Baseball Association (MABA) 9U league with an 11-2 league record. Their overall record for the season was 30-9.

Mike Mutchler served as head coach and had help from assistant coaches Ryan Doot, Josh Herring, Jayson Mellinger and Trent Walklett.

“As coaches, we are extremely proud of how the boys developed as baseball players and as individuals throughout the year,” Mike Mutchler said. “I think they really learned the value of hard work. They all experienced adversity on and off the field in their own ways, and I think the shared adversity they experienced on the field helped to create a close-knit team. It all came together this weekend and helped propel them to success.”
