A Green Hornets baseball player got a golden opportunity this summer and he took advantage.
Liam Walklett traveled to Cooperstown, New York, with his 12U baseball team in July. During the Cooperstown Dream Park tournament No. 7, not only did he go 14-for-17 at the plate with nine home runs and a grand slam but he also finished first out of 104 competitors in the Golden Arm contest.
Each tournament includes four skills competitions. For the Golden Arm, one player from each team gets three throws from center field, which is 125 feet from home plate. Throws are scored by their accuracy and distance.
Players are awarded five points when a throw goes through the center hole of the target in the air, three points when a throw hits the red circle of the target, and one point if a throw hits outside the red circle on the target in the air or if the throw hits the ground and then hits anywhere on the target.
With five points, Winklett finished three points ahead of the next best effort. Overall, his team capped the tournament with a 4-1 record, yet the Golden Arm competition serves as the highlight of his Cooperstown experience.
“It was pretty cool to win Golden Arm,” he said. “I was a little nervous with all the great players out there but was happy to win the competition for our team.”
