Jing Ying Institute of Kung Fu & Tai Chi Celebrates Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year of the Rat begins this Saturday, January 25. People around the world will ring in the Lunar New Year with celebrations of feasting, family reunions, and other festivities.

The Jing Ying Institute of Kung Fu & Tai Chi will celebrate the Lunar New Year with a series of free and low-cost workshops until the end of February. It is kicked off this Saturday with a free Lunar New Year celebration that will feature delicious food, performances, “Year of the Rat” crafts, and more. It is also the start of a month-long silent auction fundraiser for Bello Machre, a local organization that provides support to people with developmental disabilities. The owners of Jing Ying have been involved with Bello Machre for over 30 years in various capacities, including direct care.

Lunar New Year Events at Jing Ying:

Lunar New Year Open House (Saturday, January 25, 2:30pm-4pm)

Join Jing Ying Institute for a free Lunar New Year celebration that will feature delicious food, performances, "Year of the Rat" crafts, and more. It’s an open house format, but arrive by 3:00pm if you want to enjoy the lion dance. Bring friends and family to enjoy fun, giveaways and prizes. This is a wonderful event for all ages. Meditation in Motion - How to Win the Rat Race! (Monday, January 27, 8:00pm-9:00pm)

Does the "rat race" have you feeling like you're running around lost in a maze, exhausted from spinning your wheels and getting nowhere? The key to winning the rat race is to learn to slow down. This class will show participants how to reduce stress, anxiety and lack of focus. You’ll learn to still your mind by moving your body and learn movements to activate the relaxation response. Chinese Calligraphy Class (Friday, January 31, 6:00pm-7:30pm)

Tea Tasting with Tea Expert (Friday, February 7, 6:30pm-8:00pm

Valentine’s Day Tai Chi (Friday, February 14, 6:00pm-7:00pm)

Celebrate Valentine's Day with some fun tai chi exercises and a bit of healthy, ultra-premium chocolate. Jing Ying will feature chocolates from a family-owned Maryland company that owns their own cacao estate. They grow their own beans, ship them through the Port of Baltimore, and process/make the chocolate themselves. They are also engaged in boosting the fair and ethical trade of chocolate for other small cacao farmers. Show someone you love and care for them by bringing them with you to class! Self-Defense Workshop for Women & Teen Girls (Saturday, February 15, 2:00pm-4:00pm)

Learn basic skills for avoiding trouble and protecting yourself. The focus is on three pillars of self-defense: 1) avoidance 2) escape 3) fighting back. $25.
