Jones Elementary Students “Bake For Good” In Support Of Light House Shelter

In early November, the fourth- and fifth-grade classes at Jones Elementary School got their hands messy for a good cause.

Students participated in King Arthur Baking Company’s Bake for Good program through an event organized by Principal John Panitz. During a baking demonstration led by a Bake for Good representative, students discovered the program’s three goals – learn, bake and share – and were then sent home with baking kits.

Each child was able to make two loaves of bread, one to enjoy with family, and another to donate to Light House, a homeless prevention support center in Annapolis.

“This experience supported the application of math and science in a meaningful, hands-on way, giving students the opportunity to learn by doing and see real-world connections to their classroom learning,” Panitz shared. “It is also our hope that this experience helps instill the value that our effort and care can make a real and tangible difference in the lives of others.”

On November 10, students delivered more than 70 loaves of freshly baked bread to Light House as the finale to the school’s Harvest for the Hungry initiative.
