News From Scout Troop 993

Troop 993 recently celebrated three of its newest Eagle Scouts with a Court of Honor held at Severna Park United Methodist Church. The event highlighted the accomplishments of Benjamin Single, Zachary Seebold and Pierce Hanlon. While each young man had a unique experience in scouting starting in 2013 with different Cub Scout packs, they all agreed that being part of Troop 993 was paramount in their progression to the Boy Scouts' highest rank.

Troop 993 of Severna Park is an active and Scout-led troop with monthly campouts, weekly meetings, countless opportunities for community service projects, merit badges, yearly summer and high-adventure camps, and dedicated leaders guiding the Scouts to hone their skills, ignite friendships and become community leaders.

During the Court of Honor ceremony, Benjamin’s longtime friend and neighbor, Michael McMahon, described watching Benjamin grow into a service-oriented individual who consistently looked for big and small ways to help his community. For his Eagle project, he and his fellow Scouts constructed four octagon picnic tables for Kinder Farm Park’s new nature education center. Zachary’s father, David Seebold, highlighted Zachary’s commitment to the outdoors and nature preservation.

To honor his passion, Zachary designed and constructed mallard duck nesting structures in Lake Waterford Park to increase the nesting rate and protect the ducks from predators. Pierce’s father, Todd Hanlon, also an Eagle Scout, spoke about Pierce’s journey throughout multiple moves as a military family and Pierce’s empathetic leadership style. For his Eagle project, Pierce enjoyed working with Providence in Arnold to construct two wheelchair-accessible raised garden beds for Providence’s greenhouse.

On March 9, Troop 993 will coordinate the annual Scouting For Food event with the Shipley’s Choice neighborhood. They plan to fill the SPAN pantry with canned goods for the spring.
