Orioles Win 12U Green Hornets Baseball Title

The Greater Severna Park Athletic Association 12U Green Hornets baseball club season ended this summer with the Orioles claiming a dramatic 13-12 victory over the Yankees in the playoff championship at Kinder Park.

Throughout the regular season the Orioles and the Yankees were two of the top teams in interleague play against club teams from Elvaton, Glen Burnie, Lakeshore, Pasadena and Kent Island.

In the two teams’ one head-to-head game the Yankees narrowly beat the Orioles by a single run.

Orioles head coach Alan Hannon and Yankees head coach Mark Nash have been coaching against each other for several years and maintain a friendly rivalry on and off the kids’ diamond. Hannon’s favorite Major League Baseball team is the hometown Baltimore Orioles; Nash’s favorite team is the New York Yankees. Knowing their coaches are having so much fun playing against each other, and that the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles are MLB rivals, kids from both teams feed off that energy to make their head-to-head games all the more exciting.

In the championship game the O’s jumped out to a 13-5 lead, but with all youth sports, the game isn’t over until it’s over. Green Hornets rules stipulate that the trailing team has no scoring limit during their last time at bat. Coaches, players and fans alike were on the edges of their collective seats as the Yankees battled back with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning coming within one run of tying the game before the third out was made by the O’s. Four Green Hornets 12U Club teams participated in an interleague season this spring, enjoying the great opportunity to to visit different ballparks without having to drive the distances of being in a travel league. Additionally, several Kent Island teams came to Anne Arundel County to join the mini league.

The 2014 playoffs were held at Kinder Farm Park and included just the four 12U Green Hornets teams that participated in the interleague.

The 12U champion Orioles were comprised of Brendan Rach, James Dean, Brandon Tambascio, Caden Marin, Connor Wildes, Bryce Marin, Dylan Hannon, Kaleb Blackwell, Bryce Burke, Reagan Keys, Avery Kelter and J.T. Schiavone. They were coached by Alan Hannon and Sal Marin.

The runner-up Yankees were comprised of Jimmy Miller, Carson Sloat, John Edwards, Ryan Campbell, John Nash, Evan Stefanovich, Joey Cherowitzo, Camden Ward, Brauch Murray, Dalton Knopf and Ian Almuete. They were coached by Mark Nash and Jim Miller.
