Park Books & Literacy Lab To Open May 1

Posted

A traditional and independent bookstore, Park Books & Literacy Lab will open its doors in downtown Severna Park on May 1, at 555 Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard. The store’s literacy lab, which has been successfully operating since early January at a temporary location, will move into the new location.

The store will feature such book genres as fiction, non-fiction, travel, poetry, young adult and an expansive children’s literature section, as well as the work of local authors.

“We envision Park Books & Literacy Lab as a community hub of sorts,” said Park Books & Literacy Lab owner Melody Wukitch. “Not only do we look forward to celebrating local authors and artisans, but we intend to promote the love of reading by partnering with book clubs, artists and other community organizations.”

Additionally, the store’s Literacy Lab employs specialists to help develop children into engaged, passionate and wholly literate readers who will have greater success in school and ultimately increased opportunities in life. The Literacy Lab will offer both virtual and in-person support in:

  • Reading assessment (including, but not limited to, Fountas and Pinnell (F&P), WADE (Orton-Gillingham), GDRT-2 and DIBELS
  • Small group reading instruction
  • College admissions essay writing workshops
  • Guided writing and writing workshops
  • Reading readiness (pre-K through kindergarten)
  • Grade appropriate, teacher-facilitated book clubs for kids
  • Financial literacy for tweens, teens and young adults
  • Social media literacy workshops for tweens and teens

“My network of literacy specialists, special educators, psychologists, speech pathologists, college consultants, and classroom teachers are anxious to support the children of our community who may be disengaged, are new or struggling readers, or those who simply want to enjoy a reading community like ours,” Wukitch said.
