Imagine the privilege of restoring sight through a corneal transplant to a patient blind in both eyes, enabling them to see their young daughter for the first time. Each day, the doctors at Rutzen Eye Specialists help their patients truly see life in a new way, reversing vision loss from cataracts and offering a myriad of high-technology ocular surgeries and treatments. Allan Rutzen, M.D., F.A.C.S., earned his bachelors and medical degrees with honors at Cornell University before interning at Harvard University, completing an ophthalmology residency at Tufts University and undertaking two fellowships in California and Louisiana.
He joined the staff of the University of Maryland (UMD) in 1996, through which he met Sachin Kalyani, M.D., and practiced in the Shipleys Choice area until opening Rutzen Eye Specialists & Laser Center in Severna Park in 2007. I knew there was an important need for our specialty were the only corneal surgeons in Anne Arundel County, Rutzen explained of his choice in location. Because were so specialized, we receive referral patients from Howard County, Harford County, the Eastern Shore all over and are centrally located.
Over two years ago, Kalyani joined Rutzens practice, bringing with him an extensive background in ocular surgery from an internship in internal medicine at Harbor Hospital Center, an ophthalmology residency at UMD and a fellowship in cornea and external diseases at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. Kalyani earned his bachelors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his medical degree from UMDs School of Medicine.
Together, with a staff of 10, Rutzen and Kalyani offer eye care services and surgeries including corneal surgery and transplant, laser vision correction and cataract surgery, as well as treatment for corneal conditions, external eye conditions, eye inflammation, eye infections and injuries, dry eyes and uveitis.
Rutzen Eyes front desk team is devoted to helping patients through every step of their appointments, debunking the complexities of insurance, answering questions and preparing patients for their visits before they arrive. The billing staff is on hand to explain further details about insurance coverage and medical billing, and the centers technicians perform clinical eye exams and testing.
Our staff members are really terrific working with patients theyre pleasant and friendly and treat patients as individuals. We know everyone by name, and address their medical needs thoroughly, Rutzen highlighted. We take quite a bit of time with each patient to answer all of their questions.
Patients speak with staff members in preparation for appointments prior to arriving at Rutzen Eye, then complete paperwork at comfortable desks and have their vision tested before meeting with a doctor. Rutzen emphasized they are devoted to staying ahead of todays fast-paced evolution of technology, citing practices including LenSx bladeless cataract surgery as safer and yielding better results.
In addition to working closely with the chamber of commerce and donating to various charities, Rutzen and Kalyani have provided free eye care and surgery to those in need through multiple trips overseas. Stateside, Kalyani supports healthcare for American Indians, and Rutzen explained they never turn anyone away based on their ability to pay.
