There’s making a splashy hire to lead a premier sports program, and then there’s what the Severn School pulled off.
Severn announced Keegan Wilkinson as its new boys lacrosse coach on July 11. A day earlier, Wilkinson left NCAA Division I Marist College, where he had been the head coach for 13 years and associated with the program for 17 seasons.
Wilkinson, a Maryland native, left Poughkeepsie, New York, as Marist’s all-time winningest men’s lacrosse coach. In his time at the helm, his teams posted 99 wins and three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships, most recently hoisting the crown in 2023.
"The last 17 years at Marist have been truly amazing and while leaving is incredibly difficult, I have great confidence in my decision knowing that the program is positioned for tremendous success moving forward," Wilkinson said in a Marist-released statement. "… While a piece of my heart will always be in Tenney Stadium, the time is right for my family to take our next steps, and for me professionally to move on to a new challenge.”
Wilkinson replaces Joe Christie, who led Severn for seven seasons. Under his leadership, the team totaled a record of 55-53, including a 39-32 mark in the last four years.
“We are very excited to have Keegan and his family become part of the Severn community,” the school announced in a statement confirming the hire.
