The Severna Park Green Hornets 2010 boys Lightning won the PSC Classic soccer tournament on November 11-12. Although only a U14 team, they entered and won the U16 bracket against bigger boys. The Lightning rolled through group play, beating a SAC U16 team 9-0 in the opener and Liverpool's U15 team 3-0 to clinch a bye to the finals. In the finals against Old Line Black, the Lightning boys came out flying, moving the ball well, dominating one-versus-ones, and playing give-and-gos up and down the field.

With first-half goals from midfielders Liam Lambert and Eason Long and striker Christian Carvalho, the Lightning took a 3-0 lead into halftime. Old Line clawed back a goal from a corner kick early in the second half to close the gap to 3-1. The Lightning brought the lead back to three following an electric solo run by winger Nicholas Wintermyer, who dribbled past three defenders before slotting it home, and later closed the game out when Zephyr Elliott drew and converted a penalty kick to extend the lead to four.

After the game, head coach Anthony Perry said he was proud of the “phenomenal team effort” the boys put together this season and especially in the PSC Classic tournament.

“We have an awesome group of boys and parents and have a real family atmosphere on the team, with many of the boys playing together since they were 5 to 6 years old and bonds and friendships extending beyond the soccer field,” Perry said. “We place a huge emphasis on one-versus-ones, shooting and team combination play, and it was all on display this weekend with the boys scoring 17 goals in three games.

“Twelve different players scored, which shows how we don't rely on one or two star players,” Perry said. “Everyone on the team is creative and dangerous in the final third. We're really looking forward to seeing these boys continue to grow in the spring and be ready to make big contributions in high school and club soccer in the fall.”
