Severna Park Boys Soccer Edges Broadneck 2-1

In a tightly contested match on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, the Severna Park boys soccer team outlasted visiting rival Broadneck 2-1 to stay unbeaten on the season.

Andrew Campbell opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a solo run and finish, and Nathan Parkison doubled the Falcons’ lead from the penalty spot 13 minutes later. Patrick Robillard scored for the Bruins.

The game was evenly matched for large stretches and largely contested within the dueling midfields. But Severna Park (6-0-1 overall, 3-0-0 in county play) found a way to ripple the net twice and kept Broadneck at bay from there.

The Bruins had the first opportunity to score when they were awarded a penalty kick nine minutes into the game, but Matthew Schisler saved both the penalty kick and the follow-up shot.

“You just have to save it,” Schisler said matter-of-factly about his mindset approaching the penalty kick. “You make the save and then the second one. It pumps the team up.”

Schisler turned provider for the opening goal, collecting a through-ball and punting it to Campbell on the left wing. The senior midfielder did the rest, darting through the Broadneck defense and firing past the onrushing Matthew Tettemer to break the deadlock.

“I feel pretty confident if I’m one-on-one with the keeper, and I looked up and saw I only had one defender to beat,” said Campbell. “I tried to go far post, and I knew the ground was wet so it would skip a little bit, which made sure it got by [Tettemer].”

Schisler had three saves, while Tettemer made four for the Bruins.

Robillard’s goal in the dying minutes averted the shutout and gave Broadneck brief hope, but there wasn’t time for a sustained attempt to tie the match, handing the Bruins their second loss of the season (5-2-0, 3-1-0).

“I thought we responded really well to missing the penalty kick; I thought we stuck to our game plan well, but they also stuck to their plan really well and they were able to score the goal,” said Broadneck coach Sean Tettemer. “Losing one like this obviously hurts, but we have a lot of games still go to and we could see them again.”

Broadneck visits Arundel and Severna Park heads to Glen Burnie on Thursday.
